La Simplexité
(in french only)

Phenomenology and Physiology of Action - Phénoménologie et physiologie de l'action

Under the direction of Alain Berthoz et Jean-Luc Petit - Eds. O. Jacob (Septembre 2006)

Philosophers and scientists are two groups that tend to ignore one another, each pursuing its own work as if the other did not exist — though they may, in fact, be working on the same subjects (space, time, movement, perception, etc.). For once, a scientist and a philosopher have rallied their efforts in an effort to understand how our brain interacts with the world. Does the brain behave as a calculator, combining sense data before deciding how to act? Or does it behave as an emulator endowed with innate models of the world, which it corrects according to the results of experiences obtained by the senses?

Head direction cells and the neural mechanisms of spatial orientation

Edited by Sidney I. Wiener et Jeffrey S. Taube (July 2005)

Head direction cells -- neurons that fire only when an animal orients its head in a certain direction -- are found in several different brain areas, with different neurons selective for different head orientations; they are influenced by landmarks as well as motor and vestibular information concerning how the head moves through space. These properties suggest that head direction cells play an important role in determining orientation in space and in navigation [...]

The Spaces of Man - Les Espaces de l'homme

Under the direction of Alain Berthoz et Roland Recht - Eds. O. Jacob (Juin 2005)

The Empathie - L'Empathie

Under the direction of d'Alain Berthoz et Gérard Jorland - Eds. O. Jacob (Oct. 2004)

Empathy is the ability to put oneself in the position of others, and thus to understand and know them. Ever since Darwin, empathy has been regarded as the basis of all human social behaviour, and most notably of ethics. Some major psychological disorders - autism, for example - can be described as the inability to empathise. Certain types of perverse behaviour, such as the torture of defenceless victims, have been explained as distortions of empathy. This book offers an overview of studies on empathy for the past 250 years. It also describes the latest research on the subject in a variety of fields: cognitive psychology, philosophy, ethology and ethics. Alain Berthoz is a professor at the Collège de France and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He is the author of Le Sens du mouvement and La Décison, both published by Editions Odile Jacob. Gérard Jorland is a director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and the author of Les Paradoxes du capital (Editions Odile Jacob) and La Science dans la philosophie. The Decision - La Décision

Alain Berthoz - Eds. O. Jacob (Jan. 2003)

In this work, Alain Berthoz examines the psychology of decision-making, based on his conception of the human brain not as a calculator or compiler but as a simulator of action. Instead of considering the process of decision-making as a rational one, based on logical tools, he regards it as the fundamental property of the nervous system, its goal being to prepare, command and control actions and shows that to decide is to predict. Alain Berthoz teaches physiology of action and perception at the Collège de France [...]

The Sense of Motion - Le Sens du mouvement

Alain Berthoz - Eds. O. Jacob (Fév. 1997)

This book's aim is to show - as philosophers such as Sartre or Merleau-Ponty believed - that we think with our whole bodies. To the five traditional senses - sight, smell, taste, hearing and touching - Alain Berthoz adds a sixth one : kinesthesia or the sense of movement. We have forgotten it because it is not so obvious, kinesthetic captors are spread throughout the body and not concentrated in one specific organ. An yet, there is a real pleasure in movement, for the one moving and the one witnessing it, just as there is pleasure in the other senses. For there is no movement without thought. We make a decision to walk, to run, to jump or to dance, with the intention of moving from one place to another. We are thus capable of evaluating a distance, programming the trajectory and this with extreme speed, like when we are racing down a ski slope. The sense of movement obliges us to reconsider our conception of the brain.
