Presentation
For several years now, certain chairs, whether or not linked to laboratories or research centres, have wished to coordinate their scientific activities. For this purpose the Institutes came into being: highly flexible, easily modifiable federative structures, which do not have the rigidity of Departments, but aim at promoting joint research, sharing material, a secretarial office or a service, managing documentary collections or specialized libraries and better integrating personnel.
The Biology Institute brings together the ten biology chairs established either within the Collège de France or externally; the Institute of Literary Studies, seven; the Far Eastern and Near Eastern Institutes, six; the Institute of Contemporary World six.
