The Chair of Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Knowledge

Founded in 1995 by Jacques Bouveresse, the Chair of Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Knowledge has in a way succeeded both to the Chair of Philosophy of Knowledge (held by Jules Vuillemin from 1962 to 1990) and to the Chair of Comparative Epistemology (held by Gilles-Gaston Granger, from 1986 to 1990).
Jacques Bouveresse’s lectures and seminars are mostly concerned with the following topics:
- Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics (Kurt Gödel: Mathematics, Logic and Philosophy [Lectures from 2003 to 2006]).
- Philosophy of Science and Knowledge (Ludwig Boltzmann: Physicist, Epistemologist and Philosopher [Lectures from 1997-2000], Time and Irreversibility [Seminar from 1999 to 2001]).
- Philosophy of Perception (Perception, Reality and Appearances [Lectures from 2000 to 2003], Goethe’s Theory of Colors [Seminar from 2005 to 2006, in association with Pr Roland Recht, Chair of History of Fine Arts].
- Philosophy of Language (Sense and Nonsense [Lectures from 1995-1996]) and Philosophy of Literature (Time, Narrative, Fiction [Seminar from 2002 to 2004]. Literature, Philosophy and Moral Knowledge [Seminar from 2004 to 2006]).
- History of Contemporary Philosophy (Austrian Philosophy [Lectures from 1996 to 1997], Logical Empiricism and its Inheritance [Lectures from 2006 to 2007], What is a Philosophical System? [Lectures from 2007 to 2008]).

The Chair of Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Knowledge also organized numerous conferences:
The Last Wittgenstein (2002); Wittgenstein and Hertz’s Inheritance (2002); Moritz Schlick, Language and Experience (2002); Mathematics and Experience: 1918-1938 (2004); Karl Krauss’ Wars (2005); Wittgenstein: Experience and Subjectivity, Ludwig Boltzmann’s Death Centenary (2006).
Forthcoming Conferences:
- Karl Bühler: Language Thinker. Linguistics, Psychology and Philosophy. Collège de France, Paris, April 29 & 30 2009, organized by the Chair of Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Knowledge, in association with the Laboratory of Linguistic Theories History (Head: Sylvie Archaimbaut [CNRS, Université Paris-Diderot]). This conference will be held to celebrate the publication of the first translation in French of Karl’s Bülher Sprachtheorie (1934): Théorie du Langage. La function représentationnelle, Janette Friedrich and Didier Samain (eds.), Agone, January 2009.
