Chair in Anthropology of Nature

Presentation

[Philippe Descola]

Professor Philippe Descola’s Chair in Anthropology of Nature involves a comparative study of forms of relationships between humans and nonhumans and ways of representing these in stable systems, considered primarily in the light of ethnographic sources along with other iconographic and archaeological documented testimonies of an historical nature. The Chair is attached to the Social Anthropology Laboratory UMR 7130, administered primarily by the Collège de France. Professor Descola leads a research team for the UMR whose main objective is the study of cultural invariants, understood as structures or intermediate patterns between biophysical potentials and historically attested systems of practice.
