Advances in astronomy since Galileo have often been the result of progress in the field of instruments. Today, the trend which he launched in the 16th century by carrying out observations with a telescope is continuing, with a steady increase in the diameter of optics. The improved angular resolution achieved offers a better view of the stars and therefore provides a clearer understanding of how they work. This year's lectures will describe the preliminary tests undertaken in a high southern Alpine valley with a view to building a "hypertelescope" (cf. link to poster). This belongs to the next generation of instruments comprising a "diluted" giant mirror, i.e. a mirror made up of small pieces dispersed over an area. The lectures and seminars will also address recent results from observations and predictable possibilities relating to nearby stars, their planets and more distant objects such as galaxies, quasars, etc. The search for life in the Universe, which should also benefit from the new instruments, will also be addressed.
