Abstract

After a brief introduction to the CGDD, the research sub-department and their involvement in geoengineering, this talk will present current French positions on the two main families of techniques, carbon removal (EDC) and solar radiation modification (SRM). The main international negotiating bodies dealing with geoengineering will also be presented, along with the role and positions taken by France within them.

After a double degree in chemical engineering (ENSIACET/Chimie-Paris), a research master's in organic synthesis (Paris Centre) and a specialized master's in innovation and research (PSL ITI), Pierre-Alexandre Royoux completed a PhD in cold plasma chemistry and microfluidics. After a year as a temporary teaching and research assistant, he joined the centralgovernmentadministration and the Commissariat général au développement durable in August 2023. From 2023 to 2024, he was in charge of climate/energy issues within the Research Sub-Directorate, then from 2024 to the present day, energy/transport issues. Since his arrival, he has included in his scope of activity the monitoring of geo-engineering for the CGDD. This has involved him in the work of the UNEA 6 and, currently, the London Protocol. As part of his role in monitoring energy, transport and geoengineering research, he is also France's representative on Horizon Europe's 5 cluster (climate/energy/transport) and is involved in monitoring French research funding programs (France 2030).
