Learning to read involves three fundamental mechanisms: phonological decoding, the establishment of orthographic representations and self-learning. I will present a computational model of learning to read that incorporates these three mechanisms. This model will be used to better understand the different sources of difficulties in learning to read. Finally, I will present a few ways in which children can overcome these difficulties.
