God's promise of an eternal dynasty contrasts with David's adultery, when he sent his best general to his death to seize his wife, a behavior condemned by the same prophet Nathan who had promised David an eternal dynasty. The end of David's reign was punctuated by revolts, notably that of his son Absalom.
