Abstract
Algorithms are playing an increasingly important role in society, whether in computer applications or in social contexts (social media, search engines, college admissions, and electoral districting). When theory lags behind practice, methods may be applied before their fundamental aspects are fully understood, which creates risks of manipulation. The algorithmic perspective combines considerations of efficiency with a systematic approach to problems that involves various phases (modeling, formalization, solution, and application), during which randomness plays an important role. When well-designed, algorithms can be a tool for transforming society and contributing to the common good.
