Abstract

Because of their large number of atoms, macroscopic systems can easily be assembled from independent parts, like clocks and their cogs. Quantum systems, on the other hand, have properties that make them naturally regular and resistant to noise, unlike classical systems subject to chaos. Mesoscopic systems are both macroscopic in their number of atoms and quantum in their degree-of-freedom behavior : they combine the strengths of both worlds.
