Abstract
This lecture will introduce the field of functional ecology. After a definition and a brief history, it will present the functional traits that enable a general understanding of the responses of organisms to environmental gradients on the basis of their morphological, physiological, chemical or reproductive traits. The functional traits will be richly illustrated with examples at different scales for plants. Other organisms will be dealt with briefly.
