This lecture will introduce the field of functional ecology. After a definition and brief history, it will present the functional traits that provide a general understanding of organisms' responses to environmental gradients, based on their morphological, physiological, chemical or reproductive traits. The functional traits will be richly illustrated with examples at different scales for plants. Other organisms will be dealt with briefly.
