Initial Notes

Documentary by France Télévisions

Tune in tonight on France 5 for a scientific and archaeological investigation featuring Ms. Nele Ziegler, a CNRS researcher at the Institute of Civilizations at the Collège de France (UMR Proclac).

Long before it became an art form and a form of entertainment, music was a weapon, an ally of war and power, but also a sacred language for communicating with the gods and, certainly at the dawn of humanity, the soundtrack to ancestral rituals. By bringing millennia-old musical instruments back to life, deciphering some of the oldest musical compositions dating back to antiquity, or exploring the resonance of Paleolithic caves and the intriguing sounds of stones and stalactites, archaeologists, researchers, and musicologists are unveiling the echoes of the past and allowing us to hear humanity’s first notes.
