Maxime Guttin is preparing a thesis at the European University Institute, under the supervision of Lauren Kassell, on the relationship between medical and naturalistic knowledge of the brain and the construction of the notion of race in the French and British empires, from the late 18th to the early 19th century. He is particularly interested in how the category of race was constructed in relation to that of gender, class, animality and mental pathology. His interests include the history of medicine, science, natural history and anthropology in colonial contexts.
