This series of fourlectures by Carlos Lopes is part of the Collège de France's Europe cycle. In 2024-2026, this cycle is devoted to the theme "Africa-Europe".
This series of lectures explores various aspects of relations between Europe and Africa. The first will highlight the persistence of post-colonial mentalities and the narratives that continue to influence these relations. The secondconference will examine the paradoxes of development aid and show how they shape the dynamics of foreign assistance. The third will challenge conventional wisdom on Africa's demographic boom. Finally, the fourthconference will focus on the cynical and unproductive challenges of negotiations in the context of post-Cotonou agreements and agreements between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU). These conferences aim to deepen understanding of the complex issues driving Europe-Africa relations, and to encourage more nuanced thinking on these important questions.
