Jean-François Joanny's lecture shows how soft matter theory in general and, more specifically, active matter theory enable a quantitative description of biological systems from cell to tissue. After devoting a lecture to the hydrodynamic theory of active matter, in 2020-2021 he will discuss tissue physics at both the local cell scale (vertex models) and the global tissue scale.
