Overview
France faces particularly severe economic and social challenges: a struggling education system, health indicators that are declining after years of improvement, and thorny budgetary issues that are straining national solidarity. Climate change, geopolitical pressures, demographic and technological shifts, and the polarization of political discourse may give us the impression that solving these problems is impossible. However, a rich body of social science research can guide us. Throughout this course, we will focus on gaining a better understanding of these challenges. Drawing on contemporary research on France and other comparable countries, we will explore these topics, examine the solutions that have been proposed and evaluated in France and elsewhere, and outline potential paths forward for France.
