Introduction
The arts constitute a rich, yet enigmatic, field for the social sciences. Studies of artists and the conditions under which they practise their craft are common. Research into artistic organisations, the markets for artistic and cultural goods and their economics, the incorporation of innovations into the creative process, and cultural policies has proliferated. But just how far should analysis venture when it comes to examining artists’ inventiveness and the originality of their works? Is there such a thing as a comprehensive science of art? Or should we more wisely rely on the division of labour between disciplines and place our faith in the benefits of collaboration, as well as competition, between different approaches? This course aims to outline the achievements and challenges of the study of the arts through the social sciences.
