Introduction
This year’s course taught by Thomas Römer will focus on the history of the two Israelite and Judean kingdoms, from the construction of the sanctuaries in Jerusalem and the North through to the fall of the Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE and the Kingdom of Judah in 587 BCE. We will analyze key texts from the Books of Kings (comparing them with those from the Books of Chronicles) and examine the question of their historicity and ideological functions. The course will combine philological, diachronic, and historical analyses, with the aim of fostering a deeper understanding of these narratives and their functions.
