Abstract

The reading of Egyptian images based on the concept of the aspective, developed in 1963 by Emma Brunner-Traut on the basis of Heinrich Schäfer's work at the beginning of the 20th century, remains to this day one of the best-known - and most debated - hermeneutic models in Egyptology. What's more, its application to all the cultural productions of Pharaonic Egypt raises a fundamental problem : what divisions can the human sciences mobilize and/or overcome to apprehend a mode of creation and thought ? After recalling the history and principles of the aspective theory, this session will present the methodological challenges of its use, between art history, anthropology and philosophy.

Knowledge of ancient Egyptian essential.
