The Evolution and Structure of Kantian Practical Philosophy

Editing and presentation by Arnaud Pelletier

With this second volume of Martial Gueroult's unpublished lectures at the Collège de France, Arnaud Pelletier completes his critical edition of the manuscripts on Kant by one of France's greatest historians of philosophy.

Martial Gueroult had planned to publish a major book on Kant based on his lectures. This work, which would have been entitled L'Évolution et la structure de la philosophie kantienne, never saw the light of day : reworked over almost forty years, the lectures remained unpublished. Following the publication, in the same collection, of the manuscripts dealing with the Critique of Pure Reason (1957-1958), Arnaud Pelletier offers in this critical edition the final version of the lecture devoted to Kant's practical philosophy, which was given at the Collège de France for two years (1958-1959 and 1959-1960).
Without taking the place of the book that Martial Gueroult did not write, this second volume enables us to understand how the various lessons are articulated, as well as the perspective that underpins them : restoring the internal difficulties of Kant's texts and the way in which they give rise to their own overcoming. It shows how the problems of moral philosophy in the Critique of Pure Reason (1781) find their provisional solution in the Foundation of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785).
