Markus Saur is Professor of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at the University of Bonn. In 2003, he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen with a thesis on the Royal Psalms of the Hebrew Psalter. In 2008, he obtained his habilitation to direct research at the University of Basel with a thesis on the Book of Ezekiel. After teaching in Basel and Erlangen between 2002 and 2009, he became Professor of Old Testament at the University of Kiel in 2009. Since 2017, he has been Professor at the University of Bonn. His research focuses on the formation of the Psalms and the Psalter. Recently, he has focused particularly on the Wisdom Psalms. He is also working on the history of the writing of Ezekiel, for which he is currently writing a commentary. Old Testament sapiential literature is one of his main areas of interest. In 2023, he published a commentary on the book of Qohelet, entitled "Gelassenheit" (De Gruyter: Berlin/Boston, 2023). He is also the author of an introduction to Old Testament sapiential literature ("Einführung in die alttestamentliche Weisheitsliteratur", Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft: Darmstadt, 2012). In a series of essays, he explores the sapiential literature of the Hebrew Bible, in particular its links and correspondences, which he sees as indications of a coherent sapiential discourse. The lectures on the book of Qohelet that he will give in March 2026 at the Collège de France are part of this line of research.
