As part of the ANR-funded project " Power and written culture in Upper Mesopotamia in the XVIIIthcentury B.C. ", last year's lecture profiled personalities from the kingdom of Mari. This year, we'll be looking at the regions on its periphery, starting in the west, moving northwards and finishing in the east. The Mari palace archives can often be supplemented by local sources. This enables us to learn about other kings, their wives and ministers, as well as their peoples. In addition to a complex politico-military history, the course will explore the extent to which Upper Mesopotamia formed a cultural unit during the Amorite period. The lecture will be supplemented by an international colloquium on June 18 and 19 2026.
