Abstract
The automatic analysis of digital data has become a major industrial, societal, and scientific challenge and must address the diversification and exponential growth of such data. The Assembly of the Collège de France has decided to establish a chair entirely dedicated to data science, a fundamental field that is not only transforming entire sectors of our economies and societies but also opening up vast scientific and technological horizons. Professor Stéphane Mallat, who has devoted his research to applied mathematics in signal processing and, more recently, to the study of machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks, has been appointed to this new chair.
