Who shapes our understanding of the world The people of the past or the historians of the present Universal history, as it had been practiced since antiquity, underwent a transformation beginning in the XVIth century in various contexts, from East Asia to Spanish America. Drawing on his knowledge of archives scattered across the globe and his mastery of the languages and historiographical traditions of Asia, Europe, and the Americas, S.
