Abstract
The opening lecture on Thursday, November 6, 2014, titled “Therapeutic Innovation: Developments and Trends,” provided a general framework for understanding developments and trends in the field of therapeutic innovation at the beginning of the 21st century. In developed countries, life expectancy is currently higher than ever before. For some, the period of retirement may even equal the length of their working life. Advances in hygiene and medicine, along with the reduction of many risks in both professional and personal life, have made this increase in life expectancy possible. Reaching the age of 100 is no longer reserved for a tiny minority of each generation. The availability of many effective medications—often at prices lower than those of a pack of cigarettes—has greatly contributed to this reality; yet there is currently a sense of unease regarding the pharmaceutical industry and therapeutic innovation, both among the general public and among researchers.
