The seminar presented by Prof. Svante Pääbo (Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany) showed how the different human lineages that appeared during the Middle Pleistocene can be identified thanks to the ancient DNA contained in fossil bone tissue. Paleogenetics makes it possible to specify the phylogenetic relationships between these groups, as well as their dates of divergence. It also provides valuable information on the evolution of demography.
