This year's seminar will be held in English, and participation requires a good knowledge of Sanskrit. It will be devoted to a reading of stanzas by the Buddhist philosopher Dharmakīrti (Pramāṇavārttika 3.288-300) and their commentaries by Manorathanandin and Prajñākaragupta. The passage we will examine concerns the epistemological status of certain erroneous cognitions that Indian authors describe as pseudo-perceptions, and which make us "see" mirages for example: do they all result from some form of mental elaboration, or are there purely perceptual errors? Crossing philosophical and philological perspectives, we will discuss with Madame Qingyang Huang, doctoral student at the EPHE, her work in progress editing the texts concerned.

The seminar will be held at the Institute of Civilizations, room Françoise Héritier (52, rue du Cardinal-Lemoine - 75005 Paris)
