Abstract

The correspondence of Jules Oppert preserved at the Institut de France does not form a single unit, but is made up of several batches of letters received by his correspondents, notably Jules Mohl (1800-1876), Félicien de Saulcy (1807-1880), Joachim Ménant (1820-1899), Léon Heuzey (1831-1922) and Gaston Maspero (1846-1916). The letters to Jules Mohl, sent during his mission to Mesopotamia in 1952, are in German; everything else is in French. The letters deal with scientific subjects, including deciphering and establishing chronology, as well as controversies between colleagues, professional problems and the search for subsidies to publish the works.
