Abstract

Jules Oppert's participation in the May 25, 1857 session of the Royal Asiatic Society, in the deciphering of the prism of Tiglath-phalazar I, an Assyrian document, made him one of the official decipherers of Assyrian. Like all pioneers of Assyriology, he was interested in a large number of corpuses, depending on the discoveries of the time, among which purely Assyrian documentation plays a significant role. We therefore propose to study Jules Oppert's work on the Assyrian world in an attempt to identify his research issues and their evolution, and thus gain an idea of his vision and understanding of Assyria.
