Donato Marazzi

Research Engineer affiliated with the Chair in Written Culture in Late Antiquity and Byzantine Papyrology

Presentation

Trained in papyrology during his studies at the University of Milan, Donato Marazzi earned his doctorate at Santa Maria Capua Vetere in 2026. His dissertation consisted of the edition of 32 Greek paraliterary and documentary texts from the Roman, Byzantine, and Arab periods, drawn from the “Milano Vogliano” collection. He is interested not only in the edition of papyri but also in ancient documentary archives—most recently those of a family of weavers from Tebtynis and of Dioscorus of Aphrodite—; to the reconstruction of manuscripts that have been dismembered and scattered across multiple collections; as well as to the Greco-Coptic school in Late Antiquity and the Arab period—in particular, wax tablets and ink tablets. The material culture of writing is also one of his main areas of focus. Since 2023, he has participated in the annual excavation campaigns at Tebtynis (Umm-el-Breigât, Egypt), led by the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo and the University of Milan. There, he works on the restoration and study of Greek papyri and ostraca, as well as on surveying, the archaeological interpretation of the site, and the structural restoration of ruined buildings.
