After studying at the National School of Statistics and Economic Administration (ENSAE) and earning a Ph.D. in biostatistics, Simon Cauchemez joined the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London in 2005. In 2013, he joined the Pasteur Institute, where he established the Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Diseases Unit, which he continues to lead today. His primary research interests focus on developing statistical and mathematical methods to understand the spread of infectious agents in populations, assess the impact of interventions, and optimize control strategies in the face of epidemics. His approach is multidisciplinary, examining infectious diseases at different scales and using a variety of data sources. Throughout his career, he has studied the spread of infectious agents such as influenza, dengue, Ebola, chikungunya, plague, MERS-CoV, and Zika. He served on the Scientific Committee advising the government during the COVID-19 pandemic and was named a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor in 2022 for his contribution to pandemic research. He has received numerous awards for his work, notably from the Academy of Sciences, the Foundation for Medical Research, the Collège de France Foundation, and the Fondation de France.
