Résumé

Ongoing debates around colonial legacies in a multipolar world mark a new phase that I characterize as reflexive globalization. While traditionally viewed in economic terms and often seen as a unidirectional process ultimately of ‘Westernisation’, globalization in this new phase brings to light also critical intellectual dimensions, becoming more multidirectional. The positions of South and North are being redefined and rebalanced. In this phase, the Northern foundations of concepts and epistemic assumptions are increasingly challenged for their colonial and imperial legacies. Representative democracy is one of those concepts that have deep roots in Western political and constitutional thought and yet took on or had various forms around the world. My lecture will explore how ideas of representative democracy travelled around the world, what formats it took on and where overlaps and divergences rest. The lecture will also investigate what approaches and methodologies are necessary to investigate this journey and understand representative democracy in more globally reflexive ways.
