Sara Cortés-Llamas holds a PhD in Chemistry from the Centre for Chemical Research at the Autonomous University of Morelos (UAEM). She obtained her PhD in 2005 under the supervision of Dr Miguel Muñoz-Hernández. During her doctoral studies, she focused her research on synthesizing and applying organometallic aluminium complexes. In 2006, she joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Guadalajara. In 2009, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research with Professor Douglas B. Grotjahn's group at San Diego State University, working on the organometallic chemistry of iridium. Her current research focuses on the recovery of precious metals using organic ligands to promote more environmentally friendly extraction systems. She is a member of the National System of Researchers (SECIHTI-Level II). She is currently on sabbatical, conducting research in the laboratory of Professor Louis Fensterbank at the Collège de France.
