Abstract

The fourth conference finally will address the responses that have been given to this campaign for a " common food policy " of the European Union. In July 2019, the President of the European Commission announced a " green pact for Europe " as a flagship project for the 2019-2024 European legislature. In May 2020, the Commission proposed to include a " farm-to-table food strategy " (" from farm to fork ") within the green pact, largely inspired by proposals for an EU " common food policy ".

Although several steps have been taken to translate this food strategy into legislative acts and budgetary choices, the work remains largely unfinished as a new campaign for the European elections in June 2024 gets underway in early 2024. The sharp inflation in food prices during 2022 and the anger expressed by the farming community at the start of 2024, as well as the strong rise of radical right-wing parties in the June 2024 elections, which tended to pit the protection of purchasing power against the ecological transition in the area of food, are all obstacles to accelerating the transformation of food systems in Europe. We will examine how these obstacles can be overcome.
