Abstract

Journalists are a very specific group of users in the “second world” of digital data. They have greater access to data that can inform public debate than researchers do; in exchange, with rare exceptions, they lack the human and material resources necessary to build and maintain high-quality databases. To address this, newsrooms have developed long-term international partnerships and/or ad hoc collaborations, and are investing efforts in working with computer scientists. We will present journalistic projects from the perspective of their data analysis needs and introduce research-based methods to meet those needs.
