Abstract
The proliferation of open data sources—freely available to everyone without legal restrictions—along with the spread of data shared on social media, the digitization of news articles and television and radio broadcasts, and the emergence of new online media formats, has lowered the barrier to accessing data for a vast number of users. Among the applications that have emerged to take advantage of this data, OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) enables journalists—or any curious or resourceful citizen—to learn about, verify, or establish facts on topics ranging from armed conflicts to the movements of a billionaire. We will examine these applications from a data management perspective, identifying their successes, challenges, and opportunities.
