Abstract

The study of language development shows that certain structural configurations are systematically mastered before others. Is there a logic that presides over the acquisition of elements, rules and resulting structures ? Fundamental research into locality and mapping is proving invaluable in understanding many aspects of acquisition ; conversely, results from the study of language development can make a decisive contribution to the study of the foundations of language.

In this lesson, I would like to illustrate this dual interaction between theoretical research and work on acquisition, with particular reference to the role of ideas about locality and cartographic articulation in the study of language development.
