Abstract
With a view to comparing them with the ‘Wives of the God’ in ancient Egypt, this seminar will examine the role of women amongst the personnel of the thousands of cults in ancient Greece. There is no room for ambiguity: the fundamental heterogeneity of the societies in question, and in particular of their respective political systems, paves the way above all for a differential comparative approach. Beyond this expected observation, we shall examine the role of women in the worship of the Greek deities, in comparison with the roles assumed by men, in order to understand their significance within a profoundly patriarchal culture.
