Abstract
Sophie Hélaine has recently dissected the genetic and molecular basis for the establishment of a state of metabolic dormancy that enables these " persisters " to survive under antibiotic pressure. The bactericidal activity of antibiotics essentially requires their bacterial target to be metabolically active.
