Abstract

Why conserve nature? This question is far from simple. Although the first national conservation initiatives date back to the 17th century, initially focused on forest management, the methods and motivations behind nature conservation have evolved substantially. Today, multiple and sometimes conflicting schools of thought coexist in this field. Only recently have biological invasions been considered in conservation strategies. During this seminar, I will provide an overview of the various conservation approaches that exist in the Western world, as well as their underlying practical or philosophical principles. This will help us better understand the role of biological invasions within these different perspectives. Finally, I will present the strategies used to control or eradicate an invasive species when deemed necessary.

Guillaume Latombe is a Lecturer in Environmental Change Biology in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Edinburgh. He is an ecologist and a modeller, and his work is mostly in invasion science, conservation, macro-ecology and community ecology. Originally trained as an engineer, he has an Engineer diploma from ENSIEG, in Grenoble, and a M.Eng in machine learning from École de Technologie Supérieure from Montreal, Canada. After studying cognitive science with primates for a year at the University of Barcelona, he did a PhD at the University of Montreal, working on the modelling of animal movements, focusing on caribou, moose and wolves. Before coming to Edinburgh, Guillaume Latombe was a postdoctorate research fellow at the University of Vienna, Austria, in the Bioinvasions group, where he worked on the AlienScenarios project. This project aimed to evaluate the range of plausible futures of biological invasions for the 21st century at different spatial scales and for a range of taxonomic groups. Guillaume Latombe was also previously affiliated with the Stellenbosch Biomathematics Group and the Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and with the McGeoch Research Group at Monash University, Australia.
