2021–2022 Opening Symposium
Calls to “rebuild” Europe are growing, and the desire for a “renaissance” of Europe is intensifying. Before we reinvent Europe, shouldn’t we first understand when, where, how, and by whom it was invented—and thereby assess the scope of the “Europes” to be (re)invented? Whether conceived as a continent, a region, a civilization, an idea, a set of values and rights, a religion, languages, a myth, a legal order or culture, political institutions and a political system, various international organizations, a body of techniques and sciences, and many other things besides, Europe has consistently been a subject of study for researchers at the Collège de France. “Inventing Europe ”—a fitting theme for an interdisciplinary opening symposium.
