Abstract
Clinical trials conducted in recent years have helped to better define the validation criteria for corrective approaches (gene therapies and genome editing). Technologies for restoring vision using prosthetics (artificial retinas) and optogenetics have shown promise.

Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University, Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology, and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh. He founded the Institute of Vision and the IHU FOReSIGHT. A member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Leopoldina, he has received the Wolf Prize in Medicine. His research has led to several first-in-human trials in gene therapy, optogenetics, and prosthetic vision. He served as a visiting professor in the Technological Innovation Liliane Bettencourt Annual Chair in 2015–2016.
