Biography

Lydéric Bocquet is a physicist whose research lies at the intersection of fluid dynamics, condensed matter, and nanoscience. After completing his Ph.D. under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Hansen in Lyon, he began his scientific career as a research fellow at the CNRS in 1995, then joined the University of Lyon 1 as a professor (2002–2014) and served as a research director at the CNRS at the École Normale Supérieure (2014–2026). He is a professor affiliated with the École Normale Supérieure.

With his research team, he focuses in particular on the emerging field of nanofluidics—the science of molecular flows—which studies fluid flow and transport at the nanoscale. This world of infinitesimally small fluid dynamics lies at the frontier where the continuum of fluid mechanics meets the atomic nature of matter—and even its quantum nature. He thus combines experiments, theory, and modeling to explore the intimate mechanics of fluid interfaces, from the macroscopic level down to the molecular scale.

His fundamental research has led to the creation of several startups— SweetchEnergy , Hummink , Altr , and Ilion Water— in the fields of osmotic energy, membrane separation, and additive nanofabrication.

Lydéric Bocquet has been a member of the French Academy of Sciences since 2022 and received the CNRS Innovation Medal in 2024.
