Alain Supiot

Montesquieu, Labor Law Scholar

This contribution to the tribute paid to Jean-Pierre Le Crom, an eminent historian of labor law, aims to fill a gap in the bibliography on Montesquieu’s work: an examination of his reflections on labor; in which it becomes apparent—contrary to many common assumptions—that “civilized commerce” cannot tolerate vast disparities in wealth or the subjugation of the poor to the will of the rich.
