On Friday June 5 2026, Prof. Dario Mantovani will give a lecture at the Narbo Via Museum as part of a partnership between this institution, Château l'Hospitalet and the Collège de France.
Entitled " The ship in the storm, an example of the permanence of Roman law ", the free lecture will be devoted to explaining the reasoning of Roman jurists and its influence today. It will explore the metaphor of a ship whose cargo is partly discarded to survive the storm, raising the question of how to apportion the losses. This example shows the importance of equity, as distinct from solidarity, in the rules governing the operation of a company, and sheds light on the notion of " common damage ", still present in modern maritime law.
