Diane Bodart studied art history at La Sapienza University in Rome and at EHESS in Paris. Her research explores the relationship between conceptual invention and material execution in creative processes, in light of art theories, contexts of reception, and practices of the image. She has taught in this field at the University of Poitiers and then at Columbia University (New York). At the Collège de France, she is inaugurating the chair in the History of the Arts in Early Modern Europe this year with a course on reflection in European painting, from van Eyck to Caravaggio. Through an analysis of this fascinating detail—which creates a specular mise en abyme—the course invites students to discover the reverse side of representation.
