Abstract

Since the 2000s, controversies in the fields of environmental health, occupational health, and food safety have strained the agency system and decision-making processes. Driven by social movements, these controversies challenge the dominant forms of expertise within agencies and the forms of invisibility or disregard to which they lead. They suggest that it is impossible to reduce uncertainty to a measure of risk and call for alternative forms of regulation that incorporate other value systems.
