Abstract
This course will introduce the field of functional ecology. Following a definition and a brief historical overview, it will present the functional traits that provide a general understanding of how organisms respond to environmental gradients on the basis of their morphological, physiological, chemical or reproductive characteristics. Functional traits will be illustrated with numerous examples at different scales for plants. Other organisms will be covered briefly.
