Faced with immigration, the scientist and the politician

" Scholars not only have the right to intervene in the public debate on the migration issue, they also have a duty to do so. "

Can the scholar stand above the fray to tackle an issue as burning as the place of immigration in our societies ? Faced with the rhetoric that would have us believe that France, too generous, is letting itself be swamped by migratory flows, it is the scholar's duty to take the measure of things by conducting rigorous analyses.

François Héran takes up the challenge. While the rise in immigration is a major trend, France is by no means the most attractive country in Europe. It's a myth that our social protection system creates a pull factor.

In shattering preconceived ideas, the scientist inevitably comes up against the politician who interferes in the scientific field and strikes opinion with quantified arguments. In so doing, he reminds us that taking account of research findings in public debate is not an option, but a necessity.
